The Peruvian zoologist Frank Hajek spent years studying giant otters, Amazonia’s most delightful animal. He describes his work for their conservation throughout the Peruvian selva, and his present research in Oxford on migration from the Andes to the Amazon, pressures from mining and logging, and Peru’s policies on protected areas and indigenous peoples in its magnificent tropical forests.

‘The cultural florescence of Paracas’
by Ann Pollard Rowe

The Paracas culture that flourished on the south coast of Peru, in about 350 – 50 BC, produced creations of outstanding beauty. The distinguished textile expert Ann Rowe describes the vivid colours and intriguing iconography of its embroidered textiles, which show plants, animals, deities and people with astonishing realism. She also tells how archaeology has revealed the cultural flowering, religious ideas and wide-ranging trade of the remarkable Paracas period.

‘News from the Bridge’
by Meriel Larken

Meriel will entertain us with the latest developments on board the M.S.Yavari (1862) berthed in Puno Bay and sailing on Lake Titicaca and with tales of related and unrelated matters and happenings around the Lake in Peru and Bolivia.
The Yavari, the oldest ship of her kind in the world, was built in England and laboriously transported piecemeal over the Andes. Meriel expands on her earlier lecture with amusing anecdotes and some further observations.
