Mervyn Samuel has published a guide book to the beautiful city Ayacucho, which played a pivotal role in Peruvian history. Close to Huari, type-site of Peru’s second archaeological horizon, the town was founded by Pizarro as Guamanga to protect the road between Cuzco and Lima. It flourished, with a cathedral and university, retains much colonial architecture, and is famous for its folklore and Holy Week.  Decisive battles were fought nearby: Chupas during the conquistadores’ civil wars, and Ayacucho in Independence; and the city survived being the heartland of the Sendero Luminoso insurgency.

For those who do not wish to play but would like to come, watch the final stages of the competition (semi-finals and finals) and attend the buffet-supper, please fill in the form below by 15 September.

working in developing education for poor children in Peru

Play will start at 11 a.m.

Semi-finals and finals approximately 3.30 p.m.

A Buffet Supper will follow the prize giving ceremony.

Cash bar including Pisco sour would be available during the day.

There are over 400,000 species of beetle, more than of almost any other organism on our planet. Max Barclay, a leading entomologist at the Natural History Museum – and a spellbinding speaker – tells his adventures discovering these fascinating insects in the wonderfully diverse tropical forests of Peru. His lecture in the Museum’s splendid new Darwin Centre will feature real specimens, real and historical.

We will gather at 6.15 pm. by the Natural History Museum’s DC2 Reception desk.

This is because the venue is in a non-public part of the Museum and we will need to be escorted in and out.

If you can’t get to the Museum before 6.15 pm. then you should come to the Queensgate entrance to the Museum. You can call Esther at 07710041163 and she will come and let you in.

Gordon Davidson has built up an international reputation for his atmospheric landscapes. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art, he has visited Peru twice to put this exhibition together. Closer to home, he has been presented with the Stella Artois Highly Commended Award for his contributions to the arts in Scotland.

Miguel Alexiades, a highly accomplished anthropologist working in the Peruvian selva, describes his work with the Ese Eja people on the river straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in one of the most bio-diverse regions on earth.  He describes the unique and intimate relationship that the Ese Eja have to their ancestral homelands, their deep knowledge of their forests and rivers, and their own long and complex history, and the ecological footprints it has left in the forest.

The attention of Members is drawn to the following extract from the Rules:

Rule 22

“Any five members desirous of moving a resolution at a General Meeting shall give notice in writing thereof to the Secretary not less than thirty days before the date of the Meeting”

Rule 23

“Any four members of the Society may nominate a candidate for election as an Officer or to the Executive Committee, such nominations to be submitted in writing to the Secretary at least thirty days prior to the Annual General Meeting and the written consent of the nominee shall accompany such a notice”
