Paititi was a legendary sanctuary to which the Chanca may have retreated after their defeat by the Incas.  Over sixty years ago, the British explorers Julian Tennant and Sebastian Snow thought that they had sighted it in densely forested hills far beyond Vilcabamba and Machu Picchu.  John Beauclerk managed to reach this very remote location, guided by an Ashaninka and a Matsigenka - for whom it is a sacred place from which they exclude all other strangers. He tells us what he found after a punishing exploration
