Imagine Peru: D1 Dance Company
The Anglo Peruvian Society presents a powerful performance by the D1 Dance Company revealing how the real-life personal transformations of each member have inspired collective change in Peru. The dance company is part of the non-profit D1 Cultural Association that works with vulnerable young people in Peru and was founded in 2005 by Vania Masias; artistic and choreographic director (2019 Pan American Games opening ceremony among others).
Imagine Peru is a dance theatre performance inspired by the personal lives and improvisations of the D1 Dance Company members. A group of young artists meet to share their personal experiences. These stories talk about fragility, vulnerability, resilience, the search for identity and the overwhelming violence against women. These issues transcend the lives of these dancers and also Peruvian society itself as it progresses without noticing the wounds we have to heal as a country. This performance aims to open the dialogue about important issues for our society. We will not expose certainties. We are keen to find questions that confront us as a collective, recognizing that, sometimes it is necessary to connect with the things we fear the most in order to transform our destiny.
D1 Cultural Association’s vision is to transform vulnerable young people’s lives through the arts. In order to achieve this we work through formative processes, with training projects and programmes that apply the D1 methodology (dance and expressive arts) with young people in order to develop the full potential. We also develop transformational artistic productions, projects and tours in order to make our work visible, inspiring new audiences and engaging with new communities.
The D1 Dance Company UK tour in November 2019 seeks to make D1’s work with young people visible and inspire audiences with Imagine Peru, which will be presented in Kings Place (Hall One) on 27th November at 7:30pm. Exchanges between the D1 Dance Company and youth programmes based in the UK are also part of the tour programme.
All funds raised from this event will directly contribute to D1 Cultural Association’s work.
