The Anglo Peruvian Society is very pleased to announce a ZOOM lecture on Tuesday September 22nd at 7pm by the anthropologist Jeremy Narby, a leading specialist on shamanism and its practices in Peru. His theme is:
“What is ayahuasca, how does it work and what does it do?"
Ayahuasca is a psychoactive Amazonian vine, as well as a brew containing this vine and often other plants. Depending on who prepares it, the brew can contain harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine, DMT, nicotine, or scopolamine. There is no fixed recipe. Classically, academics have understood ayahuasca to be a drinkable form of DMT, but this is a reductionist view. Just how ayahuasca works in the brain and body remains mysterious, even if recent brain imagery studies provide interesting avenues of reflection. The brew seems to have a therapeutic potential for treating depression, anxiety, trauma, and addiction.
Jeremy Narby is an anthropologist and activist. He works for Swiss NGO as Amazonian projects coordinator, backing the initiatives of indigenous Amazonian people for land titling, bilingual education and sustainable economic activities. He has written several books on the interface between indigenous systems of knowledge and science, including "The cosmic serpent" and "Intelligence in nature”, and he co-edited with Francis Huxley the anthology “Shamans through time”.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Zoom. Login details to be sent closer to event date.
