BICENTENARY CELEBRATION SERIES

THE GOLD EATERS: HISTORY AS FICTION, FICTION AS HISTORY

LECTURE BY RONALD WRIGHT

The Anglo Peruvian Society is pleased to welcome Ronald Wright, who will speak about his lifelong fascination with Peru, and how this led to his first book, the classic Cut Stones and Crossroads: a Journey in Peru. Ronald will also talk about his new novel The Gold Eaters, a thrilling and at times heartrending story of Pizarro's conquest as seen by his captured interpreter Felipillo. The British author Ronald Wright is a master of his craft, who has won many literary prizes and other awards for his books.

Ronald Wright was born in London in 1948 to Canadian and British parents, read archaeology and anthropology at Cambridge which was deepened by fieldwork in Latin America and Africa and further study in linguistics and comparative culture.  He is the author of ten books which have been published in sixteen languages in more than forty different countries.  Since 2003 he has lived in an island off the West Coast of Canada.

Cut-Stones and Crossroads: A Journey in the Two Worlds of Peru

Ronald Wright has created the very best travel book about Peru, for he has immersed himself in the music and language, as well as the history, politics and monuments of the indigenous Andean cultures of South America, in a way that no other travel writer has ever yet managed.  And we get to slowly share in all these personal discoveries through the humour and good fellowship of the road, spliced full of entertaining misadventures.  But there is never any doubt that there is an ultimate purpose to these journeys.  A passionate need to bare witness to the truth about the past, after centuries of persecution by an alien ruling class.  So through the dense clouds of historical tragedy, Wright excavates some hope that a revival of pride and dignity in Andean culture is possible.

Eland Books have just republished a new edition of the classic Cut Stones and Crossroads, first published in the 1980s, this slightly updated  book still gives a fresh look at every aspect of Peru, where Ronald had travelled for a year-and-a-half and spoke quechua.

The publisher has generously offered Anglo Peruvian Society members a discount on the cover-price paperback, please select the lecture-plus-book option below if you’d like a copy of this great book.
