BICENTENARY CELEBRATION SERIES
A PERUVIAN WRITER’S QUEST TO CHRONICLE LATIN AMERICA
MARIE ARANA IN CONVERSATION WITH CARLOS LOZADA
The Anglo Peruvian Society is thrilled to welcome this fantastic duo. The distinguished Peruvian author Marie Arana's new book Silver, Sword and Stone is being hugely praised for capturing the history, culture and soul of Latin America with academic accuracy and journalistic passion. Its title embraces the traditional pillars of power - finance, government and religion. It gained rapturous reviews in the USA: "power and passion of storytelling… a marvellous book"; "a sweeping view of Latin American history… throbs with passion… it celebrates the region's cultural triumphs, exuberance and generosity…"; "to trace the soul of a continent is an extraordinary feat… done with scholarly precision, moral thoroughness, and elegance of style"; "a thoughtful and revealing portrait of the fabled… world of Latin America… compelling reading"; "power and beauty of writing… extraordinary clarity… astonishing breadth and intricate depth, capturing both the magnificent sweep of history and the gripping immediacy of journalism… will break your heart and blow your mind".
Appropriately for Peru's bicentenary, Marie Arana's other books include Bolívar about the Liberator. She was for years the literary editor of The Washington Post and is now the Literary Director of the world's largest library, The Library of Congress.
Marie will talk in conversation with another Peruvian writer, Carlos Lozada, a fine Peruvian-American author, nonfiction critic for The Washington Post, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.
