BICENTENARY CELEBRATION SERIES

BRITONS IN THE YOUNG REPUBLIC OF PERU

BY ARTHUR ROBINSON

Britons in the young Republic of Peru is Arthur Robinson’s contribution to the Bicentenary celebrations with the theme of Britons involved in the young republic, drawing upon his book The Magnificent Field of Enterprise - Britons in Peru 1815-1915.

This lecture describes the experiences of British people in Peru between its Declaration of Independence and 1850. British soldiers and sailors are remembered by other speakers. But the new republic provided opportunities for trade, with exporters in England supplying merchants in Peru. Britons helped to develop the mines at Cerro de Pasco. In due course, Britons exported alpaca to Yorkshire mills; and guano as a sought after fertiliser. The Pacific Steam Navigation Company linked Peru with Britain, and Peru’s first steam locomotive ran on the English railway. Briton’s who settled in Lima opened an ‘English’ church; and British travellers in Peru told travellers’ tales, as you will hear.
