BICENTENARY CELEBRATION SERIES
WILLIAM MILLER, THE GREATEST ANGLO-PERUVIAN HERO
LECTURE BY JOHN HEMMING
William Miller, the greatest Anglo-Peruvian hero, is a talk by John Hemming on the courteous and gallant General’s contribution to Peru during and after the liberation campaign.
The Kentishman William Miller was the only senior officer on either side to fight non-stop throughout Peru’s war of independence, while still in his twenties. Fearlessly brave but highly skilled, he was in every major victory and countless skirmishes and guerrilla actions, and survived many wounds. Everyone liked this gallant gentleman – both San Martín and Bolívar, Admirals Cochrane and Guise, his own soldiers, even royalist generals he outwitted, campesinos and Limeño grandees, and ladies because he was tall, handsome and charming. Miller became Peru’s only foreign Gran Mariscal, and he is in Peru’s Pantheon of Founding Heroes.
