BICENTENARY CELEBRATION SERIES
COCHRANE, GUISE AND THE NAVAL WAR
BY BRIAN VALE
Brian Vale’s subject is Cochrane, Guise and the naval war, two exceptional Admirals whose daring efforts achieved independent Peru’s maritime security. Command of the seas played a vital role in the struggles for independence in South America. This talk will describe the naval campaigns which ensured the freedom of Chile and Peru and the challenge which the patriot governments faced in creating navies from scratch. It will outline the need for - and extent of - British recruitment and describe how the new navies of Chile and Peru swept the Spanish navy from the seas, seized its major warships and blockaded and captured seemingly impregnable fortresses like Valdivia and Callao. It will also assess the impact of the tactical skills and personalities of the men who led them, namely Lord Cochrane and Martin Guise."
